When I lived in Montgomery County, in rural South Georgia, Saxby was our congressman. I can tell you from experience that he is more of a Democrat than you think he is. He shafted the Republican Party there on several occasions by not including them in fundraising efforts in the county, yet he called on prominent Democrats to help. So much for any loyalty. But more so than that, Saxby Chambliss and his other friends in the Georgia Republican Party fall victim to this kind of trap all the time. Saxby uses the federal tax dollars to his benefit when he needs to win over voters. This is an election year, and he needs the votes of the farmers. Else, they may stay home or put their support behind a candidate they think will bring in the goods for them.
Truthfully, Democrats and Republicans are subject to doing this each year. Neither of those parties subscribe to the philosophy of limited government and rugged individualism. Sometimes, you have to make tough choices and cast votes that are tough if you are trying to keep government in its proper place. Chambliss cannot do that. The GOP cannot do that; they won't. Both parties see government as a means to an end and a solution to problems rather than the creator of those problems. Saxby should go back and read the veto message Grover Cleveland gave when he vetoed legislation appropriating $10,000 to Texas farmers whose farms were suffering from drought. The bill would have utilized that money for the purchase of seed. Cleveland basically said that bills like this would destroy our national character by creating a dependence on the feds for paternal care. WOW!!! I know I have harped on this on several sites recently, but with the current debate over the farm bill, it is totally relevant.
I hope your listeners begin to see Chambliss for what he is-a big government Republican!
Great show by the way. I live in Jackson and look forward to it each week.
